Why is UV protection so important to our eyes?

Why is UV protection so important to our eyes?

Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world. We love to spend time outdoors at the beach, and enjoying our beautiful country. While we all know that UV rays can damage the skin, did you know that the Skin Cancer Foundation has shown that the eyes are 10 times more sensitive to UV rays than your skin? Prolonged UV exposure can lead to premature cataracts, growths on the front of the eye (pterygium) and damage to the eyelids. It has been estimated that 20% of cataracts and almost 50% of pterygium treated every year in Australia are caused by sun exposure. Wearing a hat outdoors will help but won't provide you with complete protection. The only way to fully protect your eyes from harmful UV rays is to wear quality sunglasses. As well as filtering out UV rays, sunglasses are designed to protect you from indirect UV exposure such as reflections off windows, the surface of the water, roads and buildings. Sunglasses that wrap around the face will provide the maximum protection. If you want to learn more about the best sunglass protection came in and talk to us.
